We now know why small town Michigan’s Ryan Gallagher was not on “The Voice” last night to learn his fate of America’s Vote from the Four-Way Knockout round. The singer was forced to leave the hit NBC reality singing competition because he violated the show’s Covid rules.

The 32-year old Gallagher, who is from Ada near Grand Rapids, was among the four saved contestants who performed to determine the 17th singer to advance to the Live Shows. At the start of the show, host Carson Daly only said “Gallagher had to exit the competition.” We learned more today from a spokesperson.

The Voice has strict Covid protocols in place to secure a safe set. Ryan broke those protocols and out of an abundance of caution, we cannot have him continue in the competition and potentially put others at risk,” Tori Walsh from NBC Universal told MLive. No other details were given as to how he broke protocol.

Gallagher went against Team Blake’s Taryn Papa, Team Legend’s Julia Cooper and Team Gwen’s Larriah Jackson with Papa winning America’s Vote to advance.

The forcing of Gallagher to leave the show must have happened pretty suddenly as he just took to social media two nights ago asking fans to help him choose which suit to wear for last night’s show. Gallagher did update fans on his Instagram yesterday evening letting everyone know everything is fine with his family.

“Thank you for your concern for my family, however everybody is fine. That’s not the cause of what happened tonight on “The Voice.” I didn’t drop out of the show. Details are still to come.”

Gallagher had one of the more unique sounds ever to appear on the history of “The Voice.” The opera singer sounded like Josh Groban. In last week’s Four-Way Knockout, he performed Andrea Bocelli’s “Time To Say Goodbye” and received high praise from the coaches as he has throughout his journey. “Ryan, you stand out above everyone because no one sings like you,” said his coach Kelly Clarkson.

We first met Gallagher when he surprised the coaches performing Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion’s “The Prayer” during “The Voice” Blind Auditions last month.

“First of all, no one in this competition can touch you. You are totally unique,” Clarkson said as she made her pitch for Gallagher to choose her over Blake Shelton. “I’m so excited. He sounds effortless and it sounds like a conversation from the gods,” Clarkson added after he chose her team over Shelton’s.

We next saw him two weeks ago when he took on Marisa Corvo in the Battle Round. The two gave a powerful performance of Celine Dion’s “Surrender.” Clarkson chose Corvo, but used her only save on Gallagher.

Gallagher was born and raised in Grand Rapids. He attended St. Thomas the Apostle before his family moved to Ada when he was in the 5th grade. He graduated from Forest Hills Central and while in high school, also worked at his father’s construction company, Gallagher Design Inc.

After graduation, he spent two years at GRCC before moving to Nashville to pursue a singing career. He has lived in Los Angeles for the last 11 years. Gallagher has four brothers and one sister and his mother has been battling multiple sclerosis for nearly 29 years. He revealed before his Battle Round performance that his mother was battling Covid. Gallagher said she recently got out of ICU.

“My mom is just a very positive person. She is just so strong,” Gallagher told MLive. “Being kids, it was so hard because we all had to pull our weight. I think my mom being sick when we were all so young allowed us to all be so close. It gave us so much discipline, compassion and empathy at a young age.

While Gallagher has performed for many years all over the world at events like weddings, beauty pageants, and store openings, he told us he had hoped “The Voice” could give him an opportunity to advance his career to a new level.

Fans of “The Voice” might have noticed a contestant was missing on Monday’s episode: Ryan Gallagher.

The Team Kelly Clarkson singer, 31, was missing from the telecast without much explanation from host Carson Daly or the coaches.

“Team Kelly’s Ryan Gallagher had to exit the competition,” Daly said during the show, without elaborating.

What made things more peculiar was that Gallagher had tweeted about being a contestant on the show early Monday, making it seem like his exit was a last-minute decision. “Here we go America!! Never thought a small town guy like me would make it here!” he wrote.

Fans speculated that the reason for Gallagher’s departure was due to a sickness in his family, since he shared earlier this season that his mother had been hospitalized with COVID-19.

In a tweet Monday evening, however, Gallagher returned to Twitter to give an update on why he wasn’t on the show, ruling out a family sickness but otherwise leaving things unclear.

“Thank you everybody for the concern for my family. However, everybody’s fine. That’s not the cause of what happened tonight on ‘The Voice’,” he says in the clip. “I didn’t drop out of the show, details are still to come, I’ll keep you posted.

On his Instagram Stories, he also posted a photo of himself in a tuxedo with the words: “2020 you are an interesting one”

According to reports from Entertainment Tonight and Yahoo Entertainment, Gallagher was forced to leave the competition after breaking the show’s strict COVID-19 protocols.

USA TODAY has reached out to “The Voice” for comment.

Monday’s episode was the first live show of the season, which saw the top 17 contestants lay it all on the line.
